RICHARD S. REQUA’S LAST KNOWN RESIDENTIAL PROJECT

California Craftsman Style

The Cortis and Elizabeth Hamilton / Richard S. Requa House embodies the only known example of Master Architect Irving Gill’s 1908-1909 California Cottage blended with Master Architect Richard S. Requa’s 1941 experimentation with ranch style architecture. The house is the last known residential work Requa designed before his untimely death in June of 1941.

Although Requa is better known for the 1915-1916 Panama-California Expo and 1935 California-Pacific Expo inspired Spanish Eclectic architecture, the Hamilton/Requa House is a unique example of his work. This new discovery provides important insight into the development of ranch style architecture.
