Historic Landmark No. 1238 Neighborhood: Midtown Designated October 26, 2016 |
The Water permit is signed by Master Builder Martin V. Melhorn and is dated May 4, 1923. The Residential Building Record is dated 1922. William B. Melhorn was an important builder whose specific ahievements and contributions to the economic, architectural and aesthetic development in San Diego are significant. The home was built by Master Builder William B. Melhorn and his father, Master Builder Martin V. Melhorn, both of the Alberta Security Company. However, William's association with the house was brief, as a resident for two years. This is an excellent example of a home in the Mission style built by Martin V. Melhorn. The house features the character defining features indicative of a Mission style home. The home has a Mission shaped curvilinear parapet with flat roof and a low pitched front gabled roof covering the front porch. The roof system features Mediterranean pan tiles with small finial roof elaboration and extending exposed open eaves and rafter tails. The partial width front porch is supported by decorative brackets with large square porch piers which continue to ground level. The surface is covered by sandy stucco. The home is wood frame construction and features stucco surfacing. |
