Historic Landmark No. 1487 Community Kensington Park Designated February 23, 2023 |
The Charles H. Bickel and Alma Bickel House at 4860 Biona Drive is significant as an excellent example of Spanish Colonial Revival style. This is the only known house built by Charles H. Bickel. This house exhibits exceptional high integrity all the way around the house, including the medium grit wall stucco, wood framed windows, metal spear awning brackets, and pantile front roof. In particular, the Chicago or Prairie style central window of the East facing inset porch exhibits all original wood, including three upper sash windows with exceptionally fine window-pane patterns separated by wood muntins. The front door set in the South-side of the inset porch exhibits original antiqued cast brass door latch and a unique bird-shaped, black- painted, steel door knocker. The original, black-painted, spear awning brackets are exceptional, as these features rarely survive nine decades of wear on Kensington houses. Even the original scored cement walkway that connects the Biona Drive sidewalk with the inset front porch appears to be original. |
