Historical Landmark No. 712 Mission Hills / This house is also a contributor to the Fort Stockton Line Geographic / Traditional Historic District Historical Landmark No. 712 - Designated May 2005 |
Unusual Airplane Craftsman with Simplified Mission Revival Influences This historic Airplane Craftsman house was built c. 1912-13 within the boundary of the emerging Mission Hills Fort Stockton Historic District. It is important for both its architecture and its location along the Fort Stockton / Lewis Street Historic Trolley Line Corridor, which is a significant neighborhood cultural landscape as a Street Car Suburb. On May 26, 2005 the San Diego Historical Resources Board landmarked the house for Criterion c, Architecture. The house is in excellent condition and has been featured in San Diego Magazine and Save Our Heritage Organisation’s Mission Hills Historic House Tours. A Prohibition-era hidden door in a bookcase on the second floor is a favorite tour feature of this house, as is the one story third floor Airplane room that gives this house its main architectural distinction. |
Emerging Historic District - the Fort Stockton Trolley Corridor Much of the North Mission Hills community is under consideration for historic district status at the request of the majority of the homeowners. In addition to the proposed Fort Stockton Trolley Corridor Historic District, there are at least three other proposed contiguous districts in varying stages of progress working independently but cooperatively. Taken together, these four districts combine to cover much of the North Mission Hills community. |
